FULTON, Robert B. “Steamboat” 85, of Mechanicsville, departed this life, Tuesday, January 2, 2018 just shy of his 86th birthday. He was born in Richmond, VA to the late, Johnny Leon Fulton and Mary Pearl Ancarrow Fulton. He was also preceded in death by his wife; Mildred DeVilbiss Fulton, his son; Robert E. “Robby” Fulton, his daughter; Mildred Evelyn Fulton Walton, and his brother; Johnny Leon Fulton Jr. Robert is survived by his son; John Fulton (Pam); grandchildren, Sam Fulton, Evan Fulton (Kelly), Brandy Walton Mills (Chris), Christopher Walton, and Jessica Fulton; and one great-granddaughter Kylie Bonds. Robert joined the Virginia Air National Guard 149th Fighter Squadron in 1950. His unit was called to active federal service in the US Air Force in 1951, where he served until 1952. February 14, 1953, he married his Glen Allen High School sweetheart, Mildred Evelyn DeVilbiss. Following his military service, he returned home to Richmond and worked in the family business; Weldall Welding Company. He became the business owner and sole proprietor. In 1974 he purchased E. McLauchlan & Sons, Inc. and led that business until his retirement in 1996. He was an active coach and mentor in Chamberlayne Civic Association Youth Athletics. He was a longtime member of the Richmond Power Squadron. At the age of 60, he began playing golf and quickly began shooting some respectable scores. He was once able to shoot his age. Robert had many friends and led a very active social life in the communities in which he lived: Chamberlayne Hills, Wyndham, and Covenant Woods. He was especially fond of his Glen Allen High School group, which is very active to this day. He spent much of his lifetime with family and friends at the river cottage on the Rappahannock in Topping, Virginia. He ventured out on many fishing excursions into the river, out into the Chesapeake Bay, and out to the Atlantic Ocean. Many fish were caught, and many stories were told.
