SHEETS, Thomas A., 67 years old, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on November 10th at VCU Medical Center after a long, well-fought battle with cancer.
He was born December 30, 1955, and lived in the Richmond area all his life. Tommy and his wife, Jeanie, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in October. He attended Henrico High School and worked for both UPS and A.H. Robins after graduation. Later, he studied at VCU and completed his BS in accounting, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1995. His senior year he was awarded the Thalhimer scholarship and was inducted into the Beta Gama Sigma honor society. He also received the 1994-1995 Business School’s Student of the Year in Accounting award. After receiving his CPA certification, Tommy worked for Wheat First Securities through their many mergers and ended his career as Director of Accounting at Owens & Minor when he retired in 2020. Tommy used his expertise to help family and friends with finances and volunteered for many years as treasurer of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member, and the Wooddy’s Hundred Homeowners Association.
He had an enormous affection for motorcycles that began as a teenager and continued to ride frequently through the years. Tommy raced his KTM after high school, however, his true love was BMW motorcycles. He owned several of them during his many years of riding and shared his great love and skill with his son, Dylan. They often rode and attended various rider-skill training courses together. Tommy was a member of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America and a Life Member of the American Motorcycle Association.
Tommy had the utmost love for his family and friends. He always prioritized spending time together through family meals, vacations, and poolside gatherings at home. His friendships with the Styer family spanned more than 50 years and he enjoyed many close relationships with other friends and church family members. His great care and concern for his brother, Mike, supported him through his recent illness and death. Tommy was a true gentleman whose sly sense of humor was with him to the end. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, and grandfather and missed by so many.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy A. and Jackie Sheets, and his brother, Mike. He is survived by his wife, Jean Stephens Sheets, two children, Erin Elder (Brett) and Dylan (Charlotte), sister, Leslie Davis (Scott), nephew, Drew Davis (Caroline), and his beloved grandchildren, June Leigh Sheets, and Henry Thomas Elder. They are honored to carry on his legacy.
A memorial service is planned for 11 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church (5351 Pole Green Road, Mechanicsville, VA).
