Rachel Fitzgerald Smith

SMITH, Rachel Fitzgerald  - 85 of Mechanicsville, an angel on Earth now gained her wings in heaven on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Howard J. Smith; and she was the last to join her 10 siblings and her parents, Martin L. and Tiney L. Fitzgerald on those streets of gold. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Belinda “Sherry” Lipscomb (Mike), Theresa Walker (John), and Janice Smith (Randy); 5 grandchildren, Tonya, Shiela, Christian, Hannah, and Eric; 10 great-grandchildren, and her dear friend and sister-in-law, Jackie Fitzgerald. Rachel was a strong, fearless, independent woman. She came from a humble beginning in Nelson County, where she attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. She was intelligent and taught herself to become an accomplished local hair stylist for over 65 years. Through hard work and determination, she worked tirelessly to provide for her family and achieve all her goals. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and a beloved member of the staff at Monaghan Funeral Home. She loved flowers, was an avid gardener, and was an excellent cook.  The family will receive friends, Monday, June 12, 2023, from 5 – 8 pm at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, VA 23111, where a funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, June 13, 2023. Interment will follow at Hanover Memorial Park. After the interment, a reception in her honor will be held at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to your favorite local charity.
