NELSON, Phyllis George- passed away on July 1, 2026, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bereniece and Horace George; her beloved husband of 58 years, Reginald H. Nelson, IV; and her grandson, Bill Humphrey.
She is survived by her children, Regina N. Humphrey, Phyllis N. Schmick (Jonathan), Reginald “Bill” Nelson (Lynnette), and Sara Jane Nelson; her grandchildren, Jim Humphrey, Crissy Bolling, Phyllis Pair, Nelson Humphrey, Tyler Schmick, Peyton Schmick, Gordon Schmick, Stephanie Nelson, and Sara Araujo; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Born in Portsmouth, VA, Phyllis grew up in Eltham, VA, and graduated from New Kent High School. She attended Longwood University and graduated from Johnston Willis School of Nursing. She continued her nursing education and became a certified registered nurse anesthetist. She married Reggie in 1956 and started her family in 1958. Phyllis was devoted to the Lord, her husband, and raising her family. She served in various positions in Laurel Hill Methodist Church. Phyllis was a Cub Scout den leader, 4-H leader, and filled volunteer positions at her children’s schools. She spent many years working with the Henrico Christmas Mother program and was selected as Christmas Mother in 1981. Phyllis continued a life of service, volunteering many hours at St. Mary’s Hospital. She joined the Varina Ruritan Club and was named Varina First Citizen in 2019.
The family will receive friends from 4- 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Laurel Hill Global Methodist Church, 1919 New Market Road, Richmond, VA 23231. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Henrico Christmas Mother program, Laurel Hill Global Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
