Penny Renee (Smith) Pope

POPE, Penny S. 56, of Mechanicsville, VA passed away May 19, 2021. She was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Smith, Jr.  She is survived by her mother, Lera Smith; beloved husband of 36 years, Buddy Pope; son, J.C. Pope (Hannah); daughter, Amanda Bishop (Jeff); 2 grandchildren, Emma, and Johnny Pope; siblings, DJ Smith (Lynne), Crystal Willett (James); nephews, Cody Willett, and Cole Smith; and four-legged family, Charlotte, Ellie, Mia, Sadie, Stella, and Niko. Penny was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and cherished every moment with them.  She especially embraced her role as Nannie. Her family meant more to her than anything else in the world, something she often mentioned. When it came time to support family at events such as dog shows, horse shows, and basketball games her voice echoed above the rest. Anyone who knew Penny knew that she was the most loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, and nannie a family could ask for. Aside from spending time with her family, Penny lived for her annual Smith Mountain Lake and Outer Banks vacations where she enjoyed lounging in the sun with a good book or Sudoku puzzle. She was a true friend to all that she loved. She was as real as they came with an infectious laugh and a big heart.  She leaves a huge hole in this world and in all the hearts that loved her. One of her many lessons she has left behind is to always be true to yourself and to love and fight for your family no matter what it takes. All services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in her honor.
