With hearts full of love and profound sadness, the family of Patsy Lee Culbertson announces her peaceful passing on January 25, 2025. Born on December 10, 1942, in Asheville, North Carolina, Patsy's life was a beautiful testament to faith, kindness, and unwavering love. For 82 precious years, she touched the lives of all who had the honor of knowing her, leaving behind a legacy of grace, compassion, and strength.
Patsy was welcomed into eternity by her beloved husband of 29 years, Jack Evan Culbertson; her parents, Robert and Virginia Lee Ward; her sister, Peggy English; her brother, Ricky Ward; her dear aunt, Eloise Ferguson; and many cherished cousins, all reunited with her in everlasting peace.
Growing up in Weaverville, NC, Patsy graduated from Marshall High School in 1961 and soon after pursued her passion for beauty and creativity at the Western Academy of Hair Design. She dedicated over 30 years to her career as a hairstylist, working at Cameo Cosmetique, and Mar-Mel Beauty Salon, where her talent was matched only by her warmth and ability to make everyone feel seen and special. She retired in 1993, having touched countless lives through both her craft, and her gentle, caring spirit.
Patsy's life was deeply rooted in her faith. A devoted Christian, she lived her beliefs with quiet strength and radiant grace, finding joy in serving others, nurturing her family, and spreading kindness in ways both big and small. Even during her own times of hardship, including her final days in the hospital, she was steadfast in reaching out to check on friends and family, especially in the wake of the devastating floods in a place where she spent much time & loved homestead, Ashville, NC. Her heart always turned outward in love and concern for others. She embodied the very essence of faith, humility, and generosity.
Her greatest treasures were the relationships she cultivated. Patsy was a devoted wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother and great-grandmother, loyal sister, and steadfast friend. Her heart was a sanctuary of unconditional love, offering wisdom, comfort, and a safe place for all who needed her. Her gentle spirit was a source of strength, her words a balm, and her presence a gift.
Patsy is deeply cherished and will be forever remembered by her beloved daughters, Jerri, Gina (Teddy), and Angela; her treasured granddaughters, Jackie, Erika (Christopher), and Raquel, and their father, Ricky Leake; her dear granddaughter, Emi; her loving grandson, Benton; and her precious great-grandchildren; Colton, Charleigh, Taylor, and Mateo. She also lovingly embraced Jack's children, Bonnie (Chuck) and Mark (Mary Beth), as her own, along with their children, Emily (Ashley) and Wain (Amanda), Evan and Megan, and great-grandchildren Olivia, Jack, Charlie, and Henry.
She is survived by her beloved sister and best friend, Catherine Seal, nephew & niece Bobby Lynn & Billy; her sister-in-law, Marie Ward, niece and nephew, Lisa & Bobby; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry & Janie Hale; and countless other nieces, nephews, and friends who will hold her memory close to their hearts.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Raquel Leake, whose devoted care and tender presence brought comfort, love, and strength to her Grannie, especially in her final days. Raquel's compassion was a profound gift to both Patsy and her family. Special thanks are also extended to Gina Thompson, who affectionately nicknamed Patsy, Preacher Pat many years ago, a nod to her faithful witnessing. Gina is a treasured family friend whose daily visits and unwavering support during Patsy's time in hospice at St. Mary's Hospital brought immense peace and comfort. Heartfelt appreciation goes to Mrs. Linda Chavis, a faithful neighbor and dear friend, whose years of thoughtful care, heartfelt prayers, and watchful kindness were a blessing beyond measure.
The family is forever grateful to the compassionate caregivers of 6East at St. Mary's Hospital, especially nurses Phoebe, Popel, Teri, Kim, and PCT David, for their exceptional care and kindness. A special thank you to Melanie from Bon Secours Hospice and Sara, RN, from St. Mary's ER, whose grace and professionalism helped ensure Patsy's peaceful transition with dignity and love.
Though Patsy's earthly presence is no longer with us, her spirit shines brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Her family finds comfort in the knowledge that she has been welcomed into the arms of her Savior, greeted with the words: “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
A celebration of Patsy's life will be held at Sandston Baptist Church on February 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Sandston Baptist Church, in honor of Patsy's lifelong dedication to faith, family, and service to others.
Her faith, love, and kindness will live on etched forever in the hearts of those she touched, a lasting legacy of a life beautifully lived.
