Mary Hope Burkett, lovingly known as “Hope,” was born on March 11, 1947, in Maryland. She spent part of her early childhood in Southern Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay before growing up in Washington, D.C., where she attended St. Patrick’s Academy. While working in Washington, D.C., she met Devon Burkett, and they married on June 29, 1968, beginning a long and devoted marriage that Hope was very proud of. They made their home in Manassas, Virginia, and then Warrenton, Virginia, from 1979 to 2003, where she and her family lived on a six-acre farm, raising her children. During those years, she was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton, where she sang in the church choir. In her later years, she lived in Everett, Pennsylvania, where she and her husband enjoyed retirement on their twenty-acre farm in the mountains with a spectacular view. After her husband passed away in 2013, she moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to be closer to her children and grandchildren, until she finally settled in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
Hope dedicated her career as a Federal Employee with the U.S. Army at Vint Hill Farms Station in Northern Virginia. She was an Administrative Protocol Officer until Vint Hill closed in 1997. After that, she worked briefly at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County, MD, until 1999, when she retired at the same time as her husband, Devon. She was known for her strong work ethic, attention to detail, and quiet strength.
A devout Catholic, Hope’s faith was the foundation of her life. She attended Mass regularly, prayed faithfully for others, and gently guided her children and grandchildren in their faith. Her life was a reflection of compassion, service, and unwavering love.
Hope was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her six children: Kevin, Janie (Tamer), Jason (Anne), Brian (Barbara), Melanie (Amir), and Mark, with Jason and Brian being twins. During her years in Warrenton, she was also part of a local twins club where families gathered for events and connection. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Leela, Amir Jr., Brayden, Brenton, John, and Daniel. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Devon, and her brother Robert, whom she lost at a young age.
Hope found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved animals, especially cats, and her guilty pleasure was chocolate. She spent many hours crafting, sewing, and working with her embroidery machine. She also loved gardening—tending to her flower beds and propagating plants, nurturing life with patience and care. She was an avid reader of romance novels, and her home was filled with bookshelves that reflected her love of storytelling. She loved working on the family ancestry and kept meticulous information to create a family tree so other family members would know their family history. She had a gift for conversation and connection, always ready to talk, listen, and offer comfort. Above all, she would drop everything to be there for her children—her greatest pride and purpose.
Those who knew Hope will miss her warm disposition, her huge heart, her big hugs, and her comforting voice. She had a way of making everything feel better, reminding those around her that things were going to be okay, no matter what. May she rest in the peace of Christ.
