Marsha Bishop Obituary

BISHOP, Marsha Viola (Myers), 71 of Richmond, VA, went to be with the Lord (Yhwh) on Thursday, October 23, 2025. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jesenia Elizabeth Bishop; and her parents, Emory and Sarah (Male) Myers. She is survived by her beloved husband of 44 years, James Edward Bishop; her children, James Edward Bishop II, Jessica Sari Reed (Brian), Jonathan Allen Bishop (Adrianne), and foster daughter, Yolanda Scott; two grandchildren, Jonah Rey Bishop and Micah Morris Bishop; two brothers, Emory Myers and Trever Myers (Deborah); and numerous other relatives and friends. Marsha was born and raised in Zanesville, Ohio, where she was a member of Southland Mission Church. She graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work and later obtained a degree as a Paralegal as well. She was an active member of the Bowling Green Gospel Choir and Student Union.  Over the years she wore many hats; serving as a social worker for the Department of Social Services for many years, Secretary of the National Association of Black Veterans, Advisor for Bowling Green State University Department of Student Development, for which she received an award, program head for a community center in Ohio, and as an avid Democratic Campaigner for several presidents, including Jimmy Carter and Barak Obama. She was also the first female and first woman of color to work for Ohio Power as a line director. However, her biggest impact was made through the sharing of her love and guidance as both a mother to her own biological children, and to dozens of foster children that she cared for over forty years as a foster mother. It was her valued effort in mending those broken hearts that earned her two awards as a Local Hometown Hero. She also trained others to become foster parents. Marsha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and leader in her community. She greatly enjoyed singing in a gospel choir, as well as going to a movie every Friday night with friends and family. Other than her love for music and movies, Marsha sold Avon for many years and was a Grey’s Anatomy aficionado. She loved her family and the Lord with passion and vigor. Her servants’ heart was devoted to children and her community. She was a loving and courageous woman, and she will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family will receive friends from 12 – 2 pm, on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, VA 23111, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 2 pm. Marsha will be laid to rest on November 8, 2025, at 2 pm, at Southland Mission Cemetery, Cutler, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Restore Therapeutic Foster Care, 9097 Atlee Station Rd Suite 220, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
