Mark Butler Parrott, 76, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, passed away August 30, 2025, after a brief but brave battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Parrott; three daughters, Susan (Adam) Pugh, Elizabeth (Gregory) Fogel, and Michelle Parrott; his two brothers, Charles Parrott and Duane Parrott, Jr. He was a playful “Pop Pop” to his six surviving grandchildren: Katherine, Adam, and Chase Pugh, Elena, Bennett, and Ari Fogel. He was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine, with whom he was very close, and his father, Duane.
Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, Mark developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors in the woods and waters around him. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in civil engineering and spent his career working as a licensed professional engineer in Richmond, Virginia. His work on public and private projects can still be seen today throughout the city.
He met his wife, Deborah, while living in Richmond, and the two knew within three months that they wanted to be together forever. The couple’s wedding was held on April 16, 1977, and they truly cherished each day of their 48-year marriage. Mark and Deborah built a loving home in Mechanicsville, Virginia for their three girls full of laughter, music, family events, and Mark’s legendary stories. Mark was a dedicated father who encouraged a strong work ethic in his girls and was proud of their many accomplishments. The family delighted in raising many pets over the years, with Mark holding a special place in his heart for two of their golden retrievers, Sandy and Buddy.
The family will bury their beloved Mark at a private ceremony with a celebration of life to follow at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in celebration of Mark’s life to the American Cancer Society.
