John "Jack" Reardon Obituary

REARDON, JOHN “JACK” EUGENE, 90, formerly of Ballyreardon in Rockville, Va., died on January 9, 2021. He was born in Richmond, the second of eight children, on June 28, 1930 to Francis X. “FoXo” and Carolyn Thurston Reardon. He was married for over 60 years to Barbara Warren Reardon, who predeceased him in January 2015.  He is survived by six children, John Jr., Mary, Ann, Stephen (Denise), Kevin (Maria) and David (Melanie) and sixteen grandchildren, John III, Mark Reardon, and Rebecca Beam; John, Erin, and Colleen Gregory; Gregory, Mary Catherine, Clare, Bridget and Caroline Reardon; twins Jonathan and Matthew Reardon; and Hunter, Patrick and Julia Reardon and six great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include his siblings Patrick, Michael, Timothy and Rose Mary Cosby and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his wife “Bobbie”, he is preceded in death by siblings Francis X, Jr., Joseph and Margaret Latimer and grandchild Robert Warren Gregory.  Jack joined the Central YMCA while a 16-year-old senior at Benedictine High School to exercise with swimming and wrestling.  He soon began weightlifting.  He was hired as an office boy at C&P Telephone Company (Verizon). In June 1950, he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was called to active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War. He served in the famous 6th Marine regiment and was released in mid-1952 as a sergeant. He soon began weightlifting competitively and won several bodybuilding contests including the titles of Mr. Tidewater, Mr. Virginia, and Mr. Capitol District. He represented Virginia in the Mr. Dixie contest in Atlanta and placed third. He also participated in the 1952 Mr. America contest in Indianapolis.  He continued to lift weights regularly into his mid-80s.  After high school and military service, Jack completed personnel training at University of Richmond evening school and proceeded with a 43-year career with the telephone company as engineering manager in charge of planning for new switching sites in the fast growth era 1950-1990.  He served as a baseball manager, commissioner, and vice president of the Chamberlayne Little League for several years. He served as president of St. Paul’s School PTA and chaired the new school committee during the move to Noble Avenue.  He served as president of Virginia Citizens Planning Association. He served as a lector and lay minister over numerous years at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, and the Monte Maria Monastery of the Visitation in Rockville.  A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Catholic Church at 11AM on Saturday, January 23, 2021.  Immediately following the service, his remains will be placed in the St. Paul’s Church Columbarium.  Due to COVID-19, seating is limited.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Monte Maria Monastery of the Visitation, 12221 Bienvenu Road, Rockville, VA 23146, or St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 909 Rennie Avenue, Richmond, VA 23227.  The family wishes to express its gratitude for the support provided by the staff of St. Mary’s Woods.
