NELSON, Jr., John Warriner (Jack), 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 17, 2024. The son of the late Elizabeth and John Nelson, Jack graduated from Varina High School and Va. Tech. After a career with the Va. Dept. of Agriculture, he retired to the family farm in Varina where he raised corn, soybeans, small grains, and had a huge vegetable garden each summer. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ginny N. Balthaser. He is survived by the love of his life, Jane Mistr Nelson; daughters, Betsy Rountree (Stephen), and Nancy Wayland (Sean); son-in-law, David Balthaser; and 9 grandchildren, Rebekah, John (Arisa), Natalie, Samuel, Peter, Elliana, Micah, Hannah, and Susanna; his sister, Betsy Nelson Gottwald; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was a long-time member of Laurel Hill Methodist Church, Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, and most recently, Shalom Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am – 12:00 pm, Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, VA 23111, where a funeral service will be held at noon, followed by a reception. The interment will be private.
