Swepston, Jimmy Daris, 87 of Mechanicsville, VA, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend departed for his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Born July 18, 1937, in Marie, West Virginia, Jim was the son of the late Letcher and Anna Tabor Swepston. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gladys May Lilly; and his brother, Calvin Swepston. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 61 years, Maxine; son, Daris and wife Teri; son, Jeff and wife Bridgette; grandchildren, Amy Swepston Ellis, Travis Lee Swepston and wife Jennifer, Josh Bartlett and wife Megan, Trey Snead and wife Taylor, Cara Long, and Carleigh Long; 12 beloved great-grandchildren; and many nephews, cousins, and many close friends who were like family to him. Jimmy was raised in Summers County, WV where humble beginnings taught him the value of hard work. He was naturally inclined to understand how things worked and became a mechanic. As his career progressed, he moved to Manassas, VA to pursue an opportunity to work on the heavy equipment that was building the interstates around D.C. It was in Manassas that he met Maxine and began their lives together. Work again moved Jim and his family to Mechanicsville, VA where they made a home for the past 42 years. Most recently, he and Maxine were active members of the Black Creek Baptist Church family where Jim was Deacon Emeritus. Throughout his life, Jim was an avid gardener and always had a project underway. One of his greatest joys was the rebuilding of his 1966, cherry red, Ford F-100. Many hours spent alone, with his sons, or grandsons, working to lovingly restore the truck was his favorite pastime. More recently, even though facing a significant illness, Jim’s fighting spirit kept him here on borrowed time. The family will receive friends from 10 am – 12 pm, on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Black Creek Baptist Church, 6289 McClellan Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23111, where a funeral service will be held at noon. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor can be made to the church.
