H. Paul Irving Obituary

Irving, Harry “Paul” 91, went to be with the Lord on January 21, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marian. Their love for one another was truly an inspiration to all who knew them.

His family and the Lord were always at the heart of Paul’s life. Growing up in Cartersville, VA, Paul was the second youngest of 11 children. He loved playing music and spending time on the farm with his siblings. As a teenager, he joined the army and fought in the Korean War. Paul met Marian soon after returning home from the war. They married in 1956 and began to put roots down in the Richmond area. It was here that Paul became a devout member of his church, Shady Grove Methodist, and took on his most important roles: father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Paul was the most loving and supportive father. He taught his children the value of hard work and family. Once Paul became a grandfather he was affectionately known as “Papa”. His grandchildren have so many fond memories of their grandfather. From teaching them how to ride a bike or cheering them on in the stands, his grandkids were so proud to be one of “Papa’s Angels”. In his later years, he gained the title of “Great Papa”. Despite his health challenges, he always showed them love and affection with a big hug.

Paul will be remembered for his kindness, selflessness, and love for others. He could always be found tinkering on something, working in his garden, or just helping someone while wearing his beloved bucket hats. The family takes comfort in knowing he is now at peace in heaven with all his brothers and sisters. In addition to his wife Marian, Paul is survived by his sons Ronald (Cindy) and Michael (Michelle), his grandchildren Brittany (Scott), Eric (Gina), Gunner, Joshua, and Elizabeth, and his great-grandchildren, Charley, Drew, and Gemma. Additionally, he is survived by a large extended family including his sister-in-law, Lovena Rapole, whom he saw as a daughter, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 pm, on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, VA 23111. A funeral Service will be held at 10 am, Friday, January 26, 2024, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America at https://hdsa.org/get-involved/donation- opportunities/.
