Townsend, Gwendolyn Dunnavant - of Mechanicsville, Virginia, 87, peacefully passed away in her home on March 17, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was a proud graduate of John Marshall High School, class of 1956. She was a devout Christian, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a talented upholsterer for over 40 years. Gwen was an avid gardener, crafter, musician, western enthusiast, and a dedicated member of Black Creek Baptist Church. She served as church pianist, adult choir member, and Sunday School and Children’s Choir Director, where she encouraged members to read their bible daily and consistently welcomed and invited neighbors, friends, and anyone she met. She also volunteered countless hours with the Hanover County Council on Aging, Triad Committee, and was “Mayor” of Black Creek Civic Association for numerous years. Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Peyton Townsend, Jr., and her parents, Joseph Puryear and Bertha Blackstock Dunnavant. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Dunnavant Rowe and Paige Dunnavant Ryder; her children, Brett Townsend (Mary Anne), and Jennifer Aveson (Ryan); and stepsons, Bobby (Jody) and Kevin Townsend. Gwen was “Granny” to her cherished grandchildren, Brittany and Patrick as well as step-grandson, Travis Townsend (Brianna); and great-grandchildren Blakelynne, Macklin, and Violet. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family would like to thank all those with At Home Hospice Care for their guidance and support. Visitation will be from 10 – 11 am, on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Black Creek Baptist Church, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11:00 am. Interment afterward in the church cemetery with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Black Creek Baptist Church, 6289 McClellan Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23111.
