CEOL, Elizabeth “Liz”, 84, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026.
A real-life coal miner’s daughter, she was the youngest of eight children raised in the small town of Tresckow, Pennsylvania. It was there she met her future husband, Edward Ceol, on the steps of the church where they were later married. Together, they had five children and were married for 42 years until Ed’s death in 2003.
She was a woman of many talents. A genius with textiles, she could make a wedding dress from scratch, knit sweaters similar to the finest available in stores, and must have made hundreds of quilts in her lifetime. Items with her trademark “Hand Made by Elizabeth A. Ceol” tag are treasured. She was an outstanding cook and baker. Highlights were around the holidays with a full house when she would make cookies, cinnamon rolls, babka bread and enough pierogies to feed an army. She had a gift for making fast friends. It was amazing how she could go to a restaurant or grocery store and come out having gotten to know the wait staff, cashiers, all of them smiling and chatty whenever she’d return. This was almost certainly a product of the various moves she made with the family across the eastern US, including when she and Ed pulled up stakes from their home state of Pennsylvania and moved, with five kids, ten years old and under, to Puerto Rico. She managed that and every other challenge with fearlessness and aplomb. Perhaps her most obvious talent was that of being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She created a home that was a refuge for family, where everyone was supported with love, copious home-cooked food and her good listening ear. She believed in the power of education and raised five college graduates. She was a gracious host to friends in need, refugees, foreign exchange students, Fresh Air Fund children, visiting athletes and anyone who could use a roof over their head.
Her beliefs and passions ran deep. She was a faithful, lifelong Catholic and volunteered considerable time and effort in her various home parishes. She believed in the mission of the Church to help the underserved and put that belief into action by serving in soup kitchens, delivering meals, knitting hats for children and organizing food and toy drives. She was the most avid sports fan of the house, rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penn State football and Duke basketball. It was not beyond her to yell at the television, and, when things got really heated, you might hear a few Slovak words that may or may not have been naughty. She was a lover of animals and was a mother to many a rescued pet. Liz’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and grand-pets.
She is survived by her five children, Ed Ceol Jr. (Dawn), Beth Smith (Matt), Tracey Powell (Will), D’Ann Wilkes (Greg), Craig Ceol (Kirsten); ten grandchildren, Jillian, Alex, Ben, Christian, Carina, Quinn, Kaitlyn, Russell, Sasha and Luke; and two great grandchildren, Lily and Margaret. It was a blessing to have been in the life she led, and she will be lovingly remembered.
There will be a celebration of life on January 9th, 2026 at 1:30PM at Covenant Woods Retirement Community, 7090 Covenant Woods Dr., Mechanicsville, VA 23111. The interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Liz asked for donations to be made to The Richmond Animal League, your local animal shelter or the Addus Hope Foundation of The Hospice of Virginia.
