Earnest Gallagher, 86, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on March 29, 2026. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn West Gallagher, and his cherished daughter, Patricia “Penny” G. Free. Earnest is survived by his sons, Ernie “Bubba” Gallagher (Sharon), Eddie Gallagher, and Chris Gallagher. He also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren: Casey G. Street (Mark), Dakota Free, Corey Gallagher (Suzie), Madison Ayres (Tim), Skylar Manckia (Gary), Aidan Gallagher, and Keely Gallagher. He was a proud great-grandfather to Montana Street, Sydney Street, Haillie Street, Kansas Street, Alice Gallagher, Kira Gallagher, Bridget Gallagher, Autumn Ayres, Jacob Ayres, Cameron Ayres, Sophia Ayres, Collin Ayres, Ashby Ayres, Avah Manckia, Bentley Manckia, and Caroline Manckia. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, as well as several nieces, nephews, and many other loved ones. Earnest found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved playing poker—especially Hearts—and spent many cherished hours in Oregon Hill, where he was known as “The Legend,” fishing, listening to music—especially Willie Nelson—trying new foods, playing the lottery, and shopping, particularly at thrift stores. He enjoyed going for rides, watching sports, the weather channel, and his favorite show, NCIS. Above all, he was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved. A special note of gratitude is extended to his sister-in-law, Terri West Eckert, and his nephew, Shawn West, who were the most devoted caregivers he could have ever had. Earnest will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew him. A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1400 Randolph Street, Richmond, VA 23220. Ernie and Sharon would like to welcome friends and family into their home for a reception following the graveside services; 8299 Tarragon Drive, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
