David Rush Figuly

David Rush Figuly’s heart finished beating 2,522,515,800 times on July 4, 2026 (he would be impressed by this statistic instead of saying he was 68 years old) at his home in Bumpass, VA. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Albert and Eva Mae Rush Figuly; and his sister, Sarah Lee Kathyrn Figuly. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Ginger Figuly; her daughter, Jenny Burkhead; his step-granddaughters, Bre (Chris) Clune and Baylee Burkhead; and one great-grandson, Carter Clune. He is also survived by his brother, Albert Thomas Figuly; and his sister, Emilie Simpson; his nieces and nephews, Maria Figuly (the only one he let call him Boo- Boo Head), Alexandra Figuly, Amanda Simpson, Tyler Simpson, and Jacob Simpson; and his special aunt, Mary Rush Gayton. Born on December 27 at the tail end of 1957 when Elvis was King of the airwaves, David lived through the turbulent times of the 1960s and 1970s. He was a trendsetter when he moved to Hanover in 1970 because he was one of only a few boys his age sporting long hair. Even as a young teen, he was a hard worker who saved up his money to buy his first car, a flashy red and white GTO. Sports cars and 4x4 pickup trucks were his life back then. His life settled down a bit when he married Ginger and said she was the best thing that ever happened to him. He adored his grandchildren and loved them as his own. He was so proud of all their achievements. He was also proud of all his nieces and nephews and challenged them to do even better things. He was a champion of his niece, Maria. One of the things he enjoyed was watching her swim at the Special Olympics. David was a simple man who enjoyed a good time with family and friends. He loved driving big rigs and being on the road. He preferred working outdoors and living in the country. He would rather patronize small Mom & Pop stores and honky-tonks than going to the box stores and fancy restaurants. David was a man with a big heart. He took up for the downtrodden, both people and animals, whenever he could. He adopted his sister’s dog, Ziggy (who misses him desperately), after she passed away several years ago. He would empty out his wallet to help somebody in need. But the one thing that made him stand out is that he never stopped dreaming and hoping for better things to come.

“Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers, and me.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date yet to be determined. The family asks that any memorial gifts for David be made to either the Special Olympics of Virginia (Donate | Special Olympics) or your local SPCA or animal shelter.
