DISE, Charles Francis, 76, of Mechanicsville, departed this life on December 15, 2021 after battling mesothelioma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Walker Dise, and his parents Charles Beryl Dise and Phyllis Ann Snyder Dise. He is survived by his children Daniel Thomas Dise and Terry Lynn Dise; a sister, Mary Ann Dise Fuqua and brothers, Edwin Travis Dise, James Thomas Dise, and Joseph Kelly Dise; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In his youth, he lived in the small community of Fairport, Virginia, where he spent time as a waterman, crabbing and oystering, with his father and working on the menhaden fishing boat, the Pluck. In 1963, he enlisted and served 3 years in the Navy. He served aboard the USS Markab AR 23 which spent time deployed to the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War. After his return, he lived in Richmond, where he found work and met Judy, who became his wife. In December 1979, he moved to Mechanicsville with his wife and family. He attended Richmond Technical Center and became a certified Refrigeration, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Specialist, taught certification classes and worked over 50 years in the trade. He was an active member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society for 54 years. For many years, he held the highest level of certifications in most categories for his profession in Virginia. He retired at age 76 from Hanover County Public Schools after 26 years of service. A dedicated and hard worker, he derived great pleasure from his work, and only retired because of declining health. Charles was an avid reader with interests in nature, science, politics and technical journals. Never at a loss for words, he enjoyed neighborhood chats with his friends at West Store and McDonald’s. He often spent time regaling family and friends with humorous anecdotes and unique and interesting facts from his readings. His quick wit and dry sense of humor gained him many lifelong friendships. His recreational time was spent fishing, boating, watching NASCAR, taking photographs, gardening, and attending family gatherings. His presence will be sorely missed by many. A memorial mass will be scheduled at a future date.
