Betty Joan Burch Mawyer died peacefully in her home with her family by her side on April 25, 2026. She was 91. Betty was born in Albemarle County on September 1, 1934, to the late Virginia Foster Burch Mawyer and the late John Robert Burch. She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Ann Burch, brother Robert Hall Burch, and husband of 67 years, William K. Mawyer. She is survived by her sons Bobby (Carol) Mawyer and Brad (Lisa) Mawyer; grandchildren Matthew (Natalie) Mawyer, Katie (Michael) Poppe, Sarah (Sam) Ridenhour, Mason (Emily) Mawyer and Morgan (Juliana) Mawyer; four great-granddaughters, Emma, Ella, Thea and Lucy; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a 1952 graduate of Lane High School in Charlottesville and 1956 graduate of the Stuart Circle Hospital School of Nursing where she then worked as a nurse in the operating room. She left her profession to raise a family but returned to it in later years as an industrial nurse working at AT&T, Nabisco and Western Electric. She remained true to her nurse’s oath throughout her life in service and caring for others. As a 50+ year member of Corinth United Methodist Church, she served in a number of capacities throughout the years. While her vision allowed, she and her closest friend Nancy would visit shut-ins on a weekly basis. As her ability to be mobile declined and her sight diminished, she took upon herself the telephone ministry of the church, still checking on shut-ins and those in need of a smiling voice on the other end of the phone. She was also a member of the Sandston Junior Women’s Club and the Chancellor Wythe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Betty loved her family dearly and enjoyed every moment being with them. Whether a phone call or a visit, she always expressed thanks for a bit of time to her behalf. She was a person who truly enjoyed giving her time to the benefit of others. Betty will be missed by her family, her church and her community. Visitation will be held April 30, 2026, from 6pm to 8pm at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, Virginia 23111. A second visitation will be held at Corinth United Methodist Church in Sandston on May 1, 2026, at 10am with a funeral service to follow at 11am. Internment will follow at Mooreland Baptist Church, North Garden, Virginia at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Moreland Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 216, North Garden, Virginia 22959
