Antonio Masullo

Masullo Antonio, professor and Italian lawyer, passed away peacefully at age 91 following major health issues. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Cotter; two daughters from his first marriage, Donatella and Maria Teresa; sister Anna; nieces, Rosanna and Angela Paladino; nephews, Angelo Paladino and Stefano Masullo; and many great-nieces and nephews and spouses. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michele Masullo and Vittoria Scolpini, sister Teresa, and brother Giuseppe. Family was first and foremost in his life. Antonio was a graduate of the University of Naples in Naples, Italy and did advanced studies in linguistics at Georgetown University. He practiced law in Italy providing legal services to labor organizations and joined the Law Office of Mutarelli (serving the Bishop and Archdiocese of Naples). After coming to the United States in the 1970’s, he dedicated almost 35 years of his professional life to teaching and promoting Italian language and culture at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). His legacy includes the establishment of a strong Italian program and Minor in Italian studies. He also founded and led the European Heritage Institute that provided year-round opportunities to study abroad in Italy, France, Spain, and Austria. Thousands of students passed through his classes. Antonio taught with great passion and inspired students to speak and use the language and learn about Italian heritage and culture. As part of this, he was an early user of audio conferences to link VCU students with university students in the USA and Italy. He cared deeply about his students and their future. Even today– decades later – many stay in touch. He remains an “unforgettable professor”, one who “believed in and always encouraged” his students and “changed their lives”. Some joined his July program at the University of Perugia for Foreigners that he organized and directed for 30 years in the beautiful medieval hill-town of Perugia, Italy. Students and others had firsthand exposure to Italian language, literature, and culture, including the annual Umbrian Jazz Festival. He also organized unique experiences such as a private meeting with Italian President Leone (his former professor) at the Quirinale and private tour of the Presidential palace, a private show by Fashion Icon Emilio Pucci in Florence, a visit with Luciano Pavarotti at his home in Modena, and a visit with movie director Lina Wertmuller at her home in Rome. He introduced others to the natural beauty of Southern Italy and its major historic sites: Naples, Sorrento, the Amalfitan Coast, and Sicily, as well as the ancient cities of Pompei, Herculaneum, and Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples.

A hallmark of his career at VCU was close collaboration with faculty in political science, history, religious studies, and the arts that led to many inter-disciplinary lectures, faculty participation in the Perugia Study Abroad program, and the formation of many special studio arts programs in the Umbrian Region and Florence. He also worked closely with President Trani and VCU’s medical school on their forming new links with the University of Messina in Messina, Italy. This provided new exchange opportunities for medical students at both campuses, as well as Italian faculty teaching the humanities. Some personal passions included gardening at his home in Richmond’s historic Church Hill, tracking USA and Italian politics, and writing memorable Letters to the Editor at the Richmond Times Dispatch. In his retirement, he greatly enjoyed serving on VCU’s Fulbright Advisory Committees that help students put together a strong proposal for the prestigious Fulbright award.

A funeral service will take place at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on June 10, 2021 at 2:00pm, followed by a repast in the adjoining reception area. Antonio Masullo, professore universitario negli USA ed avvocato Italiano, si è spento serenamente all’età di 91 anni. Lascia la moglie Barbara Cotter, le due figlie , nate dal suo primo matrimonio, Donatella e Maria Teresa, la sorella Anna, i nipoti Rosanna, Angelo, Stefano ed Angela e molti pronipoti e cugini con i rispettivi congiunti. Raggiunge i suoi genitori papà Michele e mamma Vittoria , la sorella Teresa ed il fratello Giuseppe. La sua adorata moglie e la famiglia di origine erano la prima e più importante cosa della sua vita. Antonio Masullo si era laureato all’Università di Napoli (Italia) ed aveva frequentato studi superiori di linguistica alla Georgetown University.

Ha svolto la professione legale a Napoli (Italia) occupandosi di Diritto del Lavoro e Diritto Civile, collaborando anche per alcuni anni con lo Studio legale “Luigi Mutarelli” avvocato Rotale ed Ecclesiastico. Dopo essere giunto negli Stati Uniti negli anni 70’ ha dedicato circa 35 anni della sua vita professionale ad insegnare e promuovere la lingua e la cultura Italiana presso la Virginia Commonwealth University

(VCU) a Richmond - Virginia, ivi organizzando un vasto e completo programma di Studio nella materia. Ha fondato e diretto “ l’European Heritage Institute” organizzazione che offriva, annualmente, l’opportunità di studiare all’estero in particolare in Italia, Francia, Spagna ed Austria. Alla VCU centinaia di studenti hanno frequentato le sue classi. L’insegnamento, infatti, era la sua grande passione : stimolava e motivava I suoi studenti a parlare ed usare la lingua italiana nonchè ad imparare la cultura e la storia d’Italia . E’ stato un pioniere nell’uso delle audio conferenze per facilitare il collegamento tra gli studenti della VCU con gli studenti di altre Università negli USA ed in Italia. Si prendeva profondamente cura dei suoi studenti e del loro futuro. Ancora oggi, dopo decenni, molti di loro erano ancora in contatto con lui. Per questo rimarrà un “ Professore indimenticabile” , uno che “credeva e sempre incoraggiava” I suoi studenti e “ stimolava le loro passioni”. Per circa 30 anni ha organizzato e diretto programmi estivi di lingua italiana presso l’Università per Stranieri di Perugia (Italia), dove studenti ed appassionati della lingua italiana hanno, per la prima volta, avuto contatto con la lingua , la letteratura e la cultura Italiana partecipando anche all’annuale Umbria Jazz Festival. Si è fatto promotore ed organizzatore di un meeting privato al Quirinale con l’allora Presidente della Repubblica Italiana, Prof. Giovanni Leone, suo professore all’Università di Napoli; di un tour privato al Palazzo Presidenziale; di una visita privata alla Fashion House Emilio Pucci in Firenze; di un incontro con il Maestro Luciano Pavarotti nella sua casa di Modena e di un incontro con la regista Lina Wertmuller nella sua casa di Roma. Ha fatto conoscere ai suoi studeni alcuni dei più importanti siti storici e naturali del sud Italia: Pompei, Ercolano, la Valle dei Templi di Agrigento, Napoli e La Costiera Sorrentina ed Amalfitana. Alla VCU ha instaurato una stretta collaborazione con la Facoltà di Scienze Politiche, Storia, Studi Religiosi e Arti che ha portato a numerose letture interdisciplinari e partecipazioni al programma di Studi di Perugia unitamente all’istituzione di programmmi di studi in Storia dell’Arte nella regione Umbra e nella città di Firenze. Ha lavorato a stretto contatto con il Presidente Trani e la scuola medica della VCU per promuovere e favorire interscambi tra gli studenti di quest’ultima e l’Università di Messina (Italia). Dopo il suo pensionamento è stato chiamato a collaborare con il VCU’s Fulbright Advisor Commitees per l’assegnazione del prestigio premio “Fulbright”. Amava dedicarsi al giardinaggio nella sua casa in Richmond’s Historic Church Hill, seguiva la politica Americana ed Italiana e scriveva alcuni piccoli testi “Letters to the Editor” per il Richmond Times Dispatch.
