HELLAR, Albert Warren (Mungoe), 62, husband, father, warrior, teacher, and dearest friend, departed this life, peacefully surrounded by those he loved, on October 19, 2025. He rests now in Freyja’s Hall with the ancestors and all our honored dead. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Diane Hellar. He leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend, Sharon Hellar; his children, Jessica and Nicholas; and his dog, Snowball.
Mungoe was an enormous presence in so many lives it's difficult to summarize. He was a proud corpsman in the United States Navy, a nurse at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, a brilliant storyteller, a warrior of renown among his chosen family in the Society For Creative Anachronism, a teacher to so many people. Children loved him. Dogs and cats adored him. Sessrúmnir gains a hero for the ages, even as we mourn the loss of one of the kindest, sweetest, funniest men we have ever been privileged to know. Until we can drink and sing together again, we will Hail the Traveler in the style and customs worthy of our noble friend.
A celebration of his life will take place at 1pm, on Saturday October 25, 2025 at Monaghan Funeral Home Mechanicsville, VA 23111. Please bring your stories and songs for the bardic circle. Bring flowers, cat figurines and stuffed animals for his funeral bier, and libations to share and pour blóts in his honor.
