John "Jack" Frederick Bender

April 19, 1936 ~ January 9, 2019 (age 82)

BENDER, John “Jack” – 82, of Mechanicsville, VA raced his last race on January 9, 2019.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Janny Bender. Jack is survived by his daughters Stacey S. Bender of Mechanicsville and Carrie B. Keaton of Chesapeake; his grandchildren, R.P. Meredith (Nikki), Leslie Keaton, Jessica Keaton and Mark Bender; and three great grandchildren; all whom he loved very much. Jack's career started at The Richmond Times-Dispatch where he was employed for 9 years.  He worked 38 years until retiring from the Federal Reserve Bank of Virginia. His real passion was racing, which became a side career from the 60's on through the 70's.  He was sponsored by Oldsmobile and Dominion Chevrolet and set 11 National records with his partner throughout that timeline.  Jack fine-tuned life, so it would never catch him.  The result was the induction into The Little Guys Nationals and the Asphalt Angel's from years of competitive spirit. With a list of friends, too many to mention, there were always good times to be met by all.  Those that knew him the best will remember his famous saying forever, "Here's the thing...but it's gonna be alright." The family will receive friends from 4 pm - 8 pm on Friday, January 18, 2019 and again from 12 pm - 4 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Monaghan Funeral Home 7300 Creighton Parkway Mechanicsville, VA 23111.
