Anthelia "Annie" Burroughs Obituary

Burroughs, Ann, “Annie”; daughter of the late George S. Athas and Priscilla K. Athas, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2019 at the age of 82. Annie grew up in the Richmond area, and was proud of her family’s Greek heritage and her father’s success in the restaurant business after moving to the city.  She often shared fond memories of growing up off the Boulevard. Annie will always be remembered for her big heart and personality. She never met a stranger, and always found the good in every person that she knew. She also never met a baby that was not the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Her warmth and selflessness extended to animals as well. She could often be found socializing on walks around her neighborhood and giving out treats to every animal she saw. This included dogs, cats, squirrels, and even lawn ornaments. Her family believes she is now walking her devoted companion  Rudy, and feeding every animal she sees in heaven. Annie’s personality was one of a kind. She was always up for a good time and a laugh. Some of her favorite things to do included traveling to the beach and Disney World. She was always a big kid at heart. On any given Saturday you could find her at Regency, shopping with and spoiling her grandchildren, with her beloved “Swiper”. She also loved to bet on horse races and watch her car races, because that is what her dad enjoyed when she was a child. Annie was a staunch believer in voting, not only for political offices but also for American Idol or Dancing with the Stars, for which she never missed an episode. She always had a soft spot for the underdog, and frequently would give them her vote. Annie was always an avid Yankees fan, and never missed a chance to cheer on her favorite player and crush, Derek Jeter. Annie had a wicked sense of humor and loved playing jokes on family and friends. Even when struggling with Alzheimers, she maintained her love and kindness towards others and her sense of humor. Annie was a loving and devoted mother to Rick Burroughs, Cindy Irving (Ron), and Katey Millner. Her most cherished role was being “Nana” to her six grandchildren and their spouses, Brittany Sterrett (Scott), Mathew Millner (Dana), Eric Irving (Gina), Kristin Dukes, (Jason), Kayla Holland (Matt), Kara Lewis (Sam); and five great grandchildren, Atlas, Patrick, Charley, Addie, Garret, and one great grandson on the way. She will also be greatly missed by her brother, Nick Athas and his wife, Annie’s best friend, Carol; her nephew George Athas and niece Jennifer Reid (Shawn), and their children, Elena, Jake, Julia, Nicholas, and Lydia; the father of her children, Richard Burroughs, and her dear friend Betty Nethery. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2019, at 11 am at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Malvern Ave. Richmond, VA 23221, followed by interment at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Annie would have loved for you to donate to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
